How Does the Blue Light found in Sunlight, affect my Health & Sleep?
Blue light exposure directly influences our melatonin levels.
Melatonin is a very important hormone in our bodies. It’s used for preventing and healing cancer and it helps our bodies stay healthy and avoid countless other health issues. It also helps us get sleepy at night.
When we see blue light – just like the clear blue sky we see on a summer day – it directly controls how much melatonin our bodies produce.
Among all of its other healing colors, Sunlight also contains this very beneficial type of blue light.
When we get exposure to blue light during the DAYTIME, it helps set our circadian (daily) rhythm and our healthy sleep cycles
Blue light shuts off melatonin production in our bodies, which is just the way we evolved to respond. It was a natural survival mechanism back in the caveman days. You certainly didn’t want to be falling asleep in the middle of the day if you were a paleo man out hunting. That’s when all the predators could come along and find you sleeping in the field and have you for lunch! (and I don’t mean as a special guest, but rather, as the main course. 🙂 )
So, nowadays, when we see blue light, it tells our bodies “It’s the middle of the day – Shut off melatonin production! Be wide awake! Stay alert!”
When we get regular blue light exposure during the daytime as we evolved to do, then later in the evening, our bodies turn on melatonin production to help us get sleepy and heal and restore our bodies at night.
But uh-oh – if we don’t get blue light exposure during the day, we don’t create enough melatonin at night.
By getting regular blue light exposure from sunshine during the day, you’re directly helping your body get sleepy at night and giving it the important support it needs to do its nightly healing and recovery.
Not only is poor sleep very bad for our health, our brains also don’t get to do their nightly ‘defrag’ when we don’t enter deep sleep.
Poor sleep and lack of Deep Restorative Sleep is very bad for memory, focus and concentration and it really kills your productivity.

If you get regular sunshine and you DO NOT GET A SUNBURN your chances of getting skin cancer are extremely minimal. And since the types of cancer that you are more likely to get if you don’t get regular sunshine are FAR MORE DEADLY than the most common, treatable forms of skin cancer (skin cancer has extremely high survival rates), you are actually doing yourself far more harm than good by avoiding the sun.
BY AVOIDING THE SUN – YOU ARE FAR MORE LIKELY TO GET ONE OF SEVERAL TYPES OF VERY DEADLY CANCER, THAN YOU ARE TO AVOID SKIN CANCER.
This has been scientifically proven in numerous studies. It’s finally time to reverse the misconceptions that people have been led to believe about the sun.
Healing UVA, UVB and Near Infrared

Why is it so Important to Use only Non-toxic Sunscreens?
… but ONLY AFTER you’ve gotten your daily dose of sunshine without sunscreen?
Most sunscreens on the market, contain highly toxic chemicals, many of which become even more toxic when exposed to sunlight. These toxins are absorbed directly into your blood stream through your skin.
You may think you’re helping prevent skin cancer by slathering these toxic substances on yourself and your children, but research studies have now shown that a high percentage of sunscreens on the market become carcinogenic when exposed to sunlight (meaning that your sunscreens themselves can cause cancer!)
If you have to stay out under the sun longer than the recommended amount of time needed for Vitamin D production and to support your proper melatonin cycles, then it’s best to cover up with clothing and a hat and/or stay in the shade.
Or, once you’ve gotten your minimum sun exposure for that day, apply an all-natural sunscreen without any of the toxic chemicals. These natural sunscreens use non-nano particle minerals including Zinc. These minerals create a reflective barrier so the UV rays cannot penetrate.
How Do I find a Healthy, non-toxic Sunscreen?
Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes their list of the Safest and Most Dangerous Sunscreens.
EWG is the nation’s most effective environmental health, non-profit organization.

Depending on which country you live in, you will find at least some of these available.
Amazon.com is usually a good resource for buying in any country. If you have a Whole Foods Market where you live, they will also have a good selection – cross reference with the table below to seek the lowest scoring sunscreens.
My #1 personal favorite sunscreen scores a 1/10 on the EWG scale.
The LOWER the score on the EWG site, the HEALTHIER the sunscreen.
For those of you who are always asking me what sunscreen brands I personally use, my long-standing favorite is Mineral Fusion Moisturizing SPF 40 Sunscreen. I’ve been using this one for a few years now.
I like this particular sunscreen because it moisturizes my face nicely and besides doing a great job as a sunscreen, it also contains anti-aging peptides.
It doesn’t feel oily or greasy and it absorbs quickly (many mineral based sunscreens sit on your skin for a long time, making you look ghostly white, while others leave a heavy oily sheen). I buy mine on Amazon with the super savings you get with their Subscribe and Save program. It’s also usually available at Whole Foods for the full retail price (and probably most other health food markets carry it, as well)
I always apply this sunscreen to my face, neck and decolletage when I’m outdoors for any reason or when I’m working in my outdoor office. The skin on these facial areas is much more delicate and vulnerable than the rest of your body, and it’s such a small surface area where you’re not going to be making that much Vitamin D by leaving it exposed. It’s also the part of your body that is most often exposed to sunlight, so it makes sense to protect it from any possible UV damage.
If I’m riding my scooter wearing a sleeveless top, I also apply sunscreen to the tops of my shoulders where I usually get the most sun exposure.
But I let the rest of my body get full sunshine as much as possible (without burning at all, of course). When I’ve had enough sun for that day, ie. my skin starts to turn a slight pink, I then cover up, get under the shade or apply my sunscreen – depending on where I am and what the outdoor temperature is.

How Can I tell if My Current Sunscreen is Toxic?
You can go to the EWG site or use their Free App to determine the Toxicity of your Current Sunscreen
This free app is called SKIN DEEP and it’s available for Android and Iphone.
It will tell you the danger scale of any of your cosmetics products including most of the big name sunscreen brands and products.
Visit your Android or iPhone app store to download it and then check the toxicity levels of your current sunscreen.
How do I know how much Sun Exposure I should get each day?
The amount of sunlight each individual needs every day depends entirely on their skin, their genetic lineage, and their ability to tan.
People with fair skin need far less sun exposure than someone with dark skin to produce the same amount of VItamin D (an extremely important hormone for health that our bodies produce naturally when exposed to sunlight).
The most up to date rule of thumb for proper Vitamin D production: stay in the sun with at least 60-70% of your skin exposed. When your skin starts turning a very slight pink, you’re done. This amount of time will vary from 3 minutes for very pale-skinned people to over an hour for very dark-skinned individuals.
